Shatkarma (also spelled Shatkriya) is a Sanskrit term meaning "six actions." These are purification techniques in Hatha Yoga designed to cleanse the body, balance the doshas (humors), and prepare the mind and body for deeper yogic practices like pranayama and meditation.
According to yogic tradition, a clean internal system leads to better energy flow (prana), improved focus, and a healthier physical body.
The 6 Shatkarmas
1. Neti (Nasal Cleansing)
Types:
- Jala Neti: Using warm saline water and a neti pot
- Sutra Neti: Using a soft rubber catheter or thread
Purpose:
- Clears nasal passages
- Improves breathing and sinus health
- Prevents colds, allergies, and headaches
2. Dhauti (Digestive Tract Cleansing)
Types:
- Vamana Dhauti: Induced vomiting with saltwater
- Danta Dhauti: Cleaning the teeth, tongue, and throat
- Vastra Dhauti: Swallowing and removing a cloth strip
Purpose:
- Removes excess mucus and toxins from the stomach
- Aids digestion
- Detoxifies the gastrointestinal tract
3. Basti (Yogic Enema)
Types:
- Jala Basti: Using water to clean the colon
- Sthala Basti: Using air (more advanced)
Purpose:
- Flushes out the large intestine
- Improves colon health and relieves constipation
- Supports digestive system
4. Trataka (Concentrated Gazing)
How to Practice:
- Gazing steadily at a candle flame or a dot without blinking
- Followed by closing the eyes and visualizing the image
Purpose:
- Enhances concentration and eyesight
- Cleanses and strengthens the eyes
- Prepares the mind for meditation
5. Nauli (Abdominal Churning)
How to Practice:
- Contracting and rotating abdominal muscles in a wave-like motion
Purpose:
- Massages internal organs
- Improves digestion and metabolism
- Balances the Manipura chakra (solar plexus)
6. Kapalabhati (Skull-Shining Breath)
How to Practice:
- Rapid exhalation through the nose, passive inhalation
- Done in rounds
Purpose:
- Detoxifies lungs and sinuses
- Energizes the brain
- Improves mental clarity and respiratory health
Precautions
- These techniques should be practiced under the guidance of a qualified yoga teacher.
- Some are not suitable for beginners or people with certain health conditions (e.g., hypertension, ulcers, pregnancy).
