Why you should never ever miss your savasana

What is Savasana?

Savasana (or corpse pose) is a pose of complete relaxation generally at the end of your yoga asana practice. It is lying in absolute stillness in body and your mind.

Resting after a vigorous practice will let your muscles release any remaining tension, so you feel rejuvenated after your practice. It gives your body time to integrate and balance out before leaping back into life. And with the energy moving out of the head and downward, it helps us really chill and get grounded. Savasana is the down-regulator.

Although Savasana might look like a nap at the end of the yoga practice, it actually is a fully conscious pose aimed at being awake, yet completely relaxed.

How To Practice Savasana?

• Lie on your back, lying faceup

• Bring your feet wide and your hands a few inches away from your body, palms facing up and fingers relaxed.

• Legs stretched out

• Close your eyes and relax your whole body.

• Breathe while holding the pose

• Stay there for 10 to 20 minutes.

What Are The Benefits Of Savasana?

You’ve sweated and moved your body through your asana practice and it’s during the final pose that your whole being will take in all the effects of the practice: emotionally, mentally and physically.

Why Savasana Is a Difficult Position?

Savasana is referred to as the most important pose in yoga asana, but also one, if not, THE most difficult one.

The complete stillness in mind and body makes Savasana for many people the easiest pose physically, but at the same time, the most challenging pose mentally and/or emotionally. Many yoga students who can happily balance, bend, and twist through the rest of class struggle with just lying on the floor. The reason is that the art of relaxation is harder than it looks. It doesn’t happen on demand.

That’s why Savasana is such a gift. The pose sets up the conditions that allow you to gradually enter a truly relaxed state, one that is deeply refreshing in itself and that also can serve as a starting point for meditation.
